Photo: Andy Powell Welcome to Lovedog Music You've reached the home page for Lovedog music, which is where you can find out about the musical world of Milton Keynes based musician Colin Kempster You can find out about upcoming gigs, musical projects that have passed, and lots of other strange esoteric stuff. I've tried to make the site fun as well as informative, so grab yourself a coffee, relax and enjoy. >News< >Cancelled Gigs< Still Waters' gig at The Foresters on 26 July has unfortunately been cancelled due to an administrative shag up (not by me!!). >Insurrection on YouTube< Found this clip while surfing......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtiepkPy5js Thanks Rockinroy555 >Recent Gigs< It's been hectic - so let's blog it day by day Wednesday 4 June Rockstar persuaded me to get along to the jam night at The Foresters in Stony. I persuaded Martin to go along, so we did a mini Insurrection set - three numbers - 'Gimme all Tour Lovin', 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City'. We performed well - my bass playing suitably aided by the 'Slippery Nipple' I had just been bought. Judging by comments received later in the week, I think we put on a jolly good show! Thursday 5 June I woke up far the worse for wear only to find my waterbed was leaking. Oh my god - a whole day spent draining a bed, with a raging hangover (me - not the bed!) is not good. Late on the wednesday, I got a call from Colin who orgainises Buckingham's Band Jam to ask if we could host the thursday night event. Martin wasn't available, so Richard obliged and we did a couple of sets with The Curvyz to kick off, and to end the evening. I also did three numbers with Rock and Simon. Simon was immediately 'pounced' upon by MK glam rock band 'Lionsex' (great name) who were looking for a guitarist. he consequently auditioned and now finds himself in a band. A friendly bunch over at the Grand Junction in Buckingham and an enjoyable night. Friday 6 June No gig for me but I did trek down to The Navigation at Cosgrove to se 'M. Pantin' - three quarters of Cock and Bull performing French folk music featuring bagpipes and assorted wind instruments - this stuff is great - you gotta hear it to believe it - very rock 'n' roll! Could only stay for the first set but unfortunately the evening ended quite dramatically on finding a collapsed lady on the way home and having to get an ambulance out for her. Saturday 7 June A first for the Curvyz with a gig at Gamlingay Social Club. The club was rammed partly thanks to an 18th birthday party - nice one Marcus - we did our thang and had everyone boogying for lots of the first and all of the second set - can't wait to go back! Sunday 8 June The Curvyz made a welcome return to The Foresters in Stony. We decided to rock things up for this gig - and what a splendid night we had. A decent sized audience enjoyed three sets of prime cuts with lots of dancing and groove occuring - I need to thank some folk for supporting us at this one - apologies to any I missed - cheers George and his misses from work, Kit, Ross from Peartree, Mikey and his Pal, Irene and Ian, Silk, Paul Cantwell from Out of the Wood, Ed and his mates, the couple from Bancroft - sorry not sure of your names - yup a brill night - wock on wodewick! Friday 13 June The Curvyz Played at The Pomfret Arms in Towcester. This was a strange gig - it was booked about 2 hours after Rockstar lost his mum, without me knowing she'd passed on, and apparently one of the last things she'd asked Rockstar was when we would be playing a gig at The Pomfret. Spooky or what? Well - we turned it into a farewell party and the locals came out in spades. I think it was the fullest pub I've ever played in and folk were standing on the tables to see the band. There's obviously too many folk to mention on here, but I've got to mention Lisa who sang with the band and gave rousing performances of 'Valerie' and 'Proud Mary', and the guy in the straw boater who backed us with his harmonica. Thanks to all for making it such a special night. Saturday 14 June A new gig for The Curvyz at The Windmill Club in Rushden. This is a really nice club that's been recently refurbished with a friendly - if a little reserved - clientelle! Things were livened up by Jeff, Wendy, Tasha and boyfriend who once again lent their support, and my friend and Colleague Steve Jenkins and his lady Karen. Steve is usually driving when he comes to see us, and so remains reserved in the corner. On this evening though he had a couple of beers, and his impression of Amy Winehouse's dancers had me in stitches when we were playing 'rehab'! Sunday 15 June - Folk on the Green Awesome - just awesome. The weather stayed fine, and the green was full. I arrived in time to catch Arun Entwhistle who was working the crowd a treat. I couldn't pay too much attention as I was setting up to play with Michele Welborn and Silk. We went on at five past four and played four numbers. We played well and were appreciated by the crowd - I was very pleased with the sound of my upright bass - just leaving my amp flat really brought out the tone of the instrument. And then the anxious wait for our headline slot with Great Pig. No chance for a soundcheck, it was plug in and go. A few nervous moments as Ant fiddled with the settings on his keyboard before the opening strains of 'Shine On' - at which point Kevin decided he needs a pee and passes his guitar to Dave Wilkinson. Off he runs backstage to find the single portaloo occupied - he waits, and out comes Ian Rowe - then it's done and he's back on stage ready for his first four enigmatic notes....... The tension is too much and poor Dave Wilkinson comes in early - but that was about the only glitch of the evening - apart from the stage clock which stopped during 'Time'. A fantastic crowd response who really didn't want us to stop at seven o'clock, but hey - rules are rules!! It's hard to decide whether I enjoyed this or Togfest 06 more - it's irrelevant really - they were both fab gigs - and make all the hard work worthwhile. A big thanks to all who turned up, and especially to the organisers, sound crew, stage hands, stewards and helpers - thanks so much. Enjoy these pics from the stage!
Friday 20 June - CLD - The Cuba Nothing too much to much to report on this fairly uneventful gig. We'd rehearsed some old songs which we put in the set including Starlight, Steamy Windows, Come as you Are and Rock n me. All went well but I've decided to drop Starlight as I don't feel comfortable singing it. We also debuted a new number 'America' by Razorlight which went really well. Thanks to Brian and his mate, Richard the drummer and Dawn for showing out and all the regulars who seemed to enjoy us there! Saturday 21 June - Michele Welborn Trio - Linford waterside Festival We were lucky to have 40 minutes to fill at this one. The rain stopped and there was a surprisingly big crowd of peeps out to watch Michele, Silk and I. We performed the numbers we'd done at FOTG along with 'The Good Wife and the Collier', 'Bumpy Road to Love', 'Cold and Raw', 'Silver Bouree/The Jewellers Song' and 'A Fine Madness'. We were lucky not to get a drenching as the wind kept catching the top of the stage awning and dropping sheets of water on the front of the stage! Thanks to everyone who popped along - Phil Jarman, Andy from work , Adele and Ian, Gill and her welsh mate and Gareth, and also a big thanks to the sound and stage guys and the organisers. Saturday 21 June - CLD - The Albert I always enjoy playing here and the new landlord made us welcome by buying us a drink - which is always nice. It was a bloody hot evening and the previous two gigs were catching up on me. Anyway - there were a few in thanks to a birthday drinkee - nice one Caroline. Cheers to John from work, Gerry P, Geoff and Rhona and Alien for popping along. >Coming Up< This Friday 27 June - The Curvyz will be at The Courthouse in Rugby for a 9:30 kick off, then on Saturday it's a biggy with Great Pig playing at Yardley Gobion Recreation Centre. 9 pm kick off and tickets are a fiver. We've got Pete from 'Breathe' on vocals and Rick Wakeman's cousin Alan on sax. Hopefully see you soon.
