Out Of The Wood

Over a couple of years spanning the end of the last millennium and the beginning of the new one, King Tut played with the nearly legendary folk rock band 'Out of the Wood'.

OOTW were a six piece band featuring the amazing vocal talents of Sue Gray.

Other members were:

Paul Baker (Geordie) - Keyboards and occasional vox
Paul Cantwell (Mother) - Drums
Dave Gray - Rhythm guitar, vox and harmonica
Peter Grove (Basher) - Lead guitar, mandolin, bouzouki and vox.

No mention of OOTW would be complete without tribute to the bass player I replaced - Mick Starkey, who was sadly taken from us - a victim of cancer.

Mick penned some fantastic early OOTW tracks including Nancy and Progress. Mick also wrote the lyrics to the title track of our last album - 'Choices for Living'. These were put to music by Basher following Mick's untimely departure.

Prior to 'Choices', two releases were available on cassette, these were 'Castles' and 'Watching Time'.

OOTW played some cracking gigs - the ones that stick in my mind in particular were Togfest 99 where we were on stage just before headliners Togmor, and The Rock Garden, Covent Garden. It was a sweltering night, and we brought a coach load of fans and friends from Milton Keynes to support us. We only played for 40 minutes, but we blew the place apart. The air con had packed up and I will never forget Mother sitting on the stage at the end with his head between his legs trying not to faint!

OOTW reformed for a tribute to my late friend Richard Hammond in 2002. Unfortunately, Geordie couldn't make it due to illness, but it was another great night - a fitting farewell to Richard.

For a long time now the band had remained 'disunited' despite most members pursuing their own musical projects. However, on 12 June we reformed for a 'one off' at Folk on the Green in Stony Stratford.

Paul Cantwell couldn't do the gig, although he came to watch. Phil Paterson stood in for Paul and did a cracking job. The weather remained dry and a fantastic time was had by all. Check out the photos!

On this page, you will find some graphic reminders of the band. Enjoy!
